CENTENNIAL CLOCKS HISTORY

Monuments in Public Spaces
The State of Oklahoma Centennial Commission adopted the idea for utilizing post clocks and carillon chimes to serve as monuments in public spaces to celebrate the Oklahoma Centennial of 2007. Centennial clocks are located in all 77 counties throughout Oklahoma with many clocks located on courthouse squares, in front of city halls, and in other prominent public spaces. Many communities have more than one centennial clock.
The clock project proved so popular that many Rotarys, schools, universities, garden clubs, and other civic institutions installed clocks to celebrate the centennial above and beyond the official grants provided to each county. In one case in Okarche, a private citizen donated funds to purchase a clock as a tribute to his wife. In Sayre, the Centennial Commission grant was used to add clocks to the Steinbeck era courthouse building which had been cut from the buildings original construction due to cost.
